Abstract. Soils in alluvial valleys are of interest in pedo-archaeological studies in developing the environmental history of a site. Although complex soil formation processes exist in alluvial valleys, some general approaches appear to provide a basis for developing Quaternary history and providing information to archaeologists for excavation strategies. To understand the question and why the answer matters, we first need to explain the difference between soils and sediments, and horizons and deposits. Soils are vertically weathering profiles that develop in place. Soils require time and a stable ground surface to develop. Sediments, on the other hand, are particles transported by water or wind.
Geoarchaeologists studying geogenic deposits (soils and sediments) associated with archaeological sites also highlight the importance of understanding the effect of post-depositional processes (e.g., pedogenesis) on the integrity of artifact assemblages, dating of sites, and landscape evolution associated with archaeological sites (e.g Cited by: Much recent archaeological research focuses on social forces as the impetus for cultural change. Soils, Climate and Society, however, focuses on the complex relationship between human populations and the physical environment, particularly the land--the foundation of agricultural production and, by extension, of agricultural peoples.. Soils and Sediments Regional Processes (earthquakes, etc) Geomorphology, Soils, and Sediments. Soils and sediments form the MATRIX in which archaeological material is found and the CONTEXT in which it is interpreted. Geomorphology = the study of the processes involved in the development and change of landforms. Soils formed on volcanic sediments (pyroclastic material) have particular characteristics, which differentiate them from soils derived from other parent materials. In studies of volcanic materials, little effort has been made to distinguish materials derived from direct ashfall and those transported and recycled by aeolian activity or colluvial.
